Aciertos. International Film Schools Meeting
FICUNAM 2024
The International Film Festival of the National Autonomous University of Mexico – FICUNAM, opens the call for submissions for the Aciertos Competition: International Film Schools Meeting of its fourteenth edition with the support of Ibermedia.
Who is this call aimed at?
With Aciertos: International Film Schools Meeting, FICUNAM aims to become a platform for the new generations of film students from Ibero-America and Italy, contributing to the training of new talents: film school students and recent graduates. Young creators with limited exposure to the industry and international markets, who are just beginning to professionalize themselves.
Objectives:
- Promote the training and experience of filmmakers and generate alternative content for the Ibero-American audience.
- Facilitate a dialogue and connection between different film schools and create a space to showcase student works.
- Provide theoretical and practical tools to facilitate the entry of young professionals from Ibero-America into the markets.
- Promote and showcase emerging talents with the intention of fostering national productions and encouraging regional cultural and artistic development.
- Promote diversity in both filmmakers and productions in the national and international film industry through works developed in Ibero-America.
The Aciertos meeting will take place from June 17 to 20, 2024, as part of FICUNAM 14.
Educational Program:
3 theoretical-practical modules composed of workshops, roundtable discussions, and two sessions of commented screenings:
Aciertos: Program 1 and 2 / 4 hours
Two commented sessions based on the screenings of films by the participants selected through the call.
Module 1: Experimental Film Creation / 6 hours
Creative production workshop that explores various modes of working in experimental cinema. Participants will study these tools with the aim of incorporating them into their filmmaking practices.
Module 2: Production and Financing of Independent Projects / 6 hours
Review of some of the most important funding opportunities in Ibero-America to provide both conceptual and practical tools, specific doubt resolution, and a review of key points in structuring a project for successful applications to various public funds.
Module 3: Ibero-American Distribution Networks / 6 hours
Participants will gain insights into the operation of the distribution industry in Ibero-American countries, exhibition, and key players, statistics on the experiences of independent films. Various possible avenues for film exhibition and alternative strategies will be shared.
1. Entries are open to works by students from film schools in the Ibero-American region, including Latin America, Spain, Portugal, and Italy.
2. The director of the short film to be submitted must be a current student or recent graduate of the school. Alternatively, they must have been a student during the 2022-2023 academic year. Independent works by former students will not be accepted.
3. The films presented must be produced by the school.
4. Each school can officially submit a selection of three works produced from 2023 onwards. None of them can exceed 30 minutes in duration.
5. Students from each school can also apply independently with works produced by the school since 2023. The duration of these works should not exceed 30 minutes.
6. Selected participants commit to participating in all the activities of the meeting.
7. Both the selection made by the FICUNAM Committee and the jury’s decision are final.
8. The deadline for submissions is December 15, 2023, at 18:00 (Central Mexico Time). The Festival Selection Committee is not obliged to view films submitted after the deadline.
9. The fourteenth edition will take place in person with some virtual components. However, the festival reserves the right to change all or part of the program to a virtual format in case of events beyond their control, such as a health emergency or natural contingency. Any such changes will be made with the prior authorization of the film’s representative.
10. Registering a film for this call implies acceptance of these regulations.
Works selected for Aciertos: International Film Schools Meeting will compete for:
- Puma Aciertos for Best Short Film
Silver medal created by Mexican artist Marín Soto Climent$70,000.00 Mexican Pesos (for the school)
SCHOLARSHIPS
Ten Ibermedia scholarships will be awarded, consisting of:
– 100% tuition for participation in the meeting.
– Airfare with a maximum cap of 18,000 Mexican Pesos.
– Accommodation in a shared room
– Meals.
– Ground transportation from the hotel to the meeting venue.
1. To submit to Aciertos: International Film Schools Meeting, you must send the following materials to the festival before December 15, 2023, at 18:00 (Central Mexico Time):
- Complete online registration form (available on the festival’s website www.ficunam.unam.mx)
- An online version of the film with an access code. If the film is in a language other than Spanish or English, it must be subtitled in one of these two languages.
1. For the festival’s catalog and promotion, you must provide the following materials:
- Statement by the director in Spanish and/or English.
- Director ‘s bio.
- Director’s photo.
- Full film credits.
- Technical information.
- High-resolution film stills (300 dpi).
- Poster and/or press materials (if available), printed and/or in digital format.
2. Participating schools should submit:
- School logo (in curves with a transparent background, in color and black/white; and if available, negative and positive versions).
- Brief informative text about the school (16-20 lines).
3. For the screening of selected films, you should provide the following material:
- Exhibition copy of the film in DCP format and a digital file (Apple ProRes/H264) subtitled in English or English/Spanish if the original language is Portuguese. All DCP materials should comply with current DCI standards, HDD formatted to DCI specifications, with frame rate, aspect ratio, and content properly named. The festival is not responsible for changes in versions after the established delivery date. If you have a different digital exhibition format, the festival is open to proposing an alternative.
4. Films must have 100% understanding in Spanish and English, all in one version of the film.
5. Participants should provide a promotional reel of images from the film. If this material is not provided, the festival may copy frames and excerpts (up to 3 minutes) from selected films for promotional purposes on its website and other media.
1. In the event of film selection, it is recommended to send the copy in digital format. Otherwise, the participant will be responsible for shipping and returning the exhibition copy. Materials with additional charges will not be accepted.
2. The sender must inform FICUNAM of the shipping date and the tracking number of the exhibition copy. Additionally, they must consult the documentation required for shipping according to each country’s regulations.

1. The Festival will organise a digital collection with programmed films. This research and educational space will only be open for students and professionals authorised by the Festival.
2. Throughout the year, the Festival will organise exhibitions in cultural spaces and educational institutions in Mexico City and throughout Mexico offering a selection of films screened during its most recent edition. In all cases, previous authorization for screening will be asked.
Cases not foreseen in this call or derived from it will be resolved by the Organising Committee of FICUNAM in accordance with the applicable regulations and the Code of Ethics of the UNAM.
