En 1982, el volcán Chichonal hizo erupción, enterrando numerosos pueblos, incluida la comunidad zoque de Esquipulas Guayabal. Años más tarde, los habitantes de Nuevo Guayabal reconstruyen sus vidas mientras el volcán y el pueblo enterrado acechan en la maleza. In 1982, the Chichonal volcano erupted, burying numerous towns, including the Zoque community of Esquipulas Guayabal. Years later, the inhabitants of Nuevo Guayabal rebuild their lives while the volcano and the buried town lurk beneath the soil. Trinidad, a poet born on the day of the eruption, has dreamlike visions that quickly spread throughout his community, causing a collective effort to unearth the ancient town while the presence of the Piowachue (the spirit of the volcano according to the Zoque worldview) is strengthened amongst the community.
